Jargon-free relationships

Most books on biorhythms have been written by those without a scientific background. The content rarely goes beyond the presentation of biorhythmic theory as a formula which predicts daily states of being. Few authors explain or question the theory itself. Some attempt to explore biorhythmic compatibility between two people, but fail to understand the complexity of human interaction and relationships.

I'm not a master of human interaction either. But at least I was - and still am - eager to learn. A few years earlier, I attended a course run by Birkbeck College on counselling, during which I devoured a stack of books on relationships. It's an endlessly varied subject. Even for an expert, it's a lifelong learning experience.

It was clear, however, that I could widen the appeal of biorhythm theory by presenting it in a more relevant way - one that shows how we relate to each other, and which is accessible to non-mathematicians. And since psycho-babble was a language that neither I nor my intended audience could understand, I described the theory and its applications in plain English.
The Holy Grail of optimum compatibility

By now I was deeply excited about the possibilities of biorhythmic theory. My curiosity and the realisation that I could be the first person ever to devise a system for matching people biorhythmically tipped the balance. I took a break from my engineering studies to find concrete answers.

Reducing the number of calculations to just one was the easy bit. Finding a formula for matching people proved more complicated, not least because there was a serious flaw in the standard theory and its narrow, one-dimensional representation.

We relate to people on three different levels: intellectually, physically, and emotionally - and all at the same time. We rarely seek out mirror images of ourselves as partners, so a successful relationship must be based on something more subtle: an optimum compatibility. In fact, a balance between partners turns out to be far more effective than close similarity.

But when we look at the multitude of relationships in our lives and the different contexts in which they function (love partners, friends, family, neighbours, and colleagues), we see that the criteria for optimum compatibility must vary. The compatibility that makes a love relationship work is clearly different from the one that makes us click with a colleague. For each type of relationship, we need a separate matching formula.

And so the Biomatch relationship categories (love, work/business, sports/activities, friendship/sharing) were born.

Biomatch Z, the book with the electric charge

For each of the relationship categories and factors (intellectual, physical, emotional), I presented compatibility ratings in percentages as well as letters and symbols. There was also a figure for the total overall 'charge' - a concept roughly equivalent to the 'electricity' in a relationship. The result was a book, Biomatch Z - the culmination of three and a half years development of biorhythm theory.

There are two great breakthroughs in Biomatch Z. It reduces the multiple calculations for checking daily biorhythms and relationship compatibility to just one. And it contains a method for compiling a list of birth dates of compatible partners for any given person. The concepts are wonderfully simple, but the presentation looks intimidating. Biomatch Z is easy to use, yet it still comes in as a 572-page, two-and-a-half-pound monster.

Biomatch goes online

The logical next step was to create an interactive biorhythmic matching database and Biomatch software for use on the internet. Although I was happy with the contents of the book, there were still some difficulties with direct application of the matching formulas for use online.

The problem was resolved by redefining the category love, and adding an entirely new relationship category known as attraction/desire. The new category brings greater depth to the Biomatch concept. It lets us tailor matching criteria far more closely to the kind of relationship or association sought.

I won't bore you with the agonies of putting a complex interactive website together. It took the Biomatch.com team a further three years before Biomatch.com went live.

How do I feel now? Jubilant! And proud that my dream of turning infradian biorhythms into an easy-to-use, life-enhancing, and, above all, fun activity has become a reality.

But Biomatch.com is not the end, just another beginning...and a fantastically exciting and challenging one at that.
